The Toledo Healthy Forests Initiative (THFI) has since 2004 been attempting to find solutions to the forest management challenges in the Toldeo District of Belize. THFI is a roundtable mechanism that promotes an integrated, participatory, multi-sectoral and multidisciplinary approach to sustainable forest management, harmonized with national development goals, in order to achieve the long-term availability of forest resources and serve as a template for sustainable forest management in other parts of Belize. Its membership includes the Forest Department, Agriculture Department, Ministry of National Development, Toledo Alcaldes Association, Toledo District Village Councils Association, Toledo Maya Women's Council, Ya'axché Conservation Trust, Toledo Institute for Development and Environment, Sarstoon Temash Institute for Indigenous Management, Toledo Cacao Growers Association, Short Term Forest License Holders and Long Term Forest License Holders.

As a leading partner organization of THFI, Ya'axché has been at the forefront of promoting the objectives on the initiative. Under a partnership agreement with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, Ya'axché is undertaking a series of activities whose main purpose is to develop practical approaches to community based sustainable forest management and community managed forest enterprises.
